Pregnancy Travel Insurance

Choosing when to travel while pregnant is a completely personal decision. Many woman will steer clear of the early stages of pregnancy due to heightened nausea and the risk of miscarriage being at its peak in the first 12 weeks. Other women will look to travel before the late stages of pregnancy as it is likely to become more uncomfortable to fly as the pregnancy reaches the final couple of months.

Ultimately it is an individual decision and if you are feeling up to the flight and have consulted your GP or nurse, who agree that you’re safe to travel, then it’s really just up to you. You most certainly can. Airline depending, you can fly up to roughly the 36^th week of pregnancy, remember that if you fly this late into your pregnancy you will likely need to be on your return flight home before your 37^th week.

It is not uncommon for airlines to ask for a doctor’s letter to be provided, as you reach the later stages of pregnancy. This generally applies from around 28 weeks onwards but if you are showing and appear to be heavily pregnant, before 28 weeks, there is a chance that you will still be asked.

The letter should outline: your due date, that you are healthy and that your pregnancy is straight forward. Always consult your doctor or medical team before deciding to take a flight.

You should be aware that airlines can, and sometimes will, refuse to let pregnant women board, for health and safety reasons. Airlines may still refuse even with a signed letter from your doctor.
